An electrifying experience...

On 18 November of this year the boys of III Q of I.S.I.S.S. A. Manzoni, with the boys of IV Q and the teachers Di Ture, Grassito and Pascarella, went to the hydroelectric station in Presenzano for a guided visit. After about an hour of travel, the visit started under the guide of engineer Ciro Posabella who explained the importance of the hydroelectric station in Presenzano, with explanatory panels and a plastic model which reproduces the working of the station.

Presenzano, factory of energy

The hydroelectric station, which is between Caserta and Isernia, has a fundamental importance for the production of energy. It’s equidistant between Rome and Naples and near the 380 KV power line.

The course of energy

In the hydroelectric station in Presenzano the “primary” hydraulic energy is accumulated in the basin at the top of the mountain. During the working generation, the water crosses the galleries in pression and the forced conducts and arrives at the station. Here it acts on the shovels of turbine which transforms the hydraulics energy into mechanic energy of rotation and passes to the alternator, which transforms it in electric energy. Through the trasformator, the electric energy is passed on the lines of 380 KV. During the night, the electric energy is drawn from the net through the trasformator and provided to the alternator which works as a motor. The motor passes the mechanic energy which works as a pump: it draws the water from the lower basin and sends it again  at the superior basin. The pumpings systems in the daytime produce valuable energy, while in the nighttime uses the energy which is disposable for the pumping. The system has an electric power which can furnish 350000 domestic users.

The elements of the hydroelectric system

The water pumps in the nighttime from the lower basin is stored in the superior basin in Cesima.

Basin

The lover basin is in the east plain of Presenzano and has the work of accumulating the water in the station during the day. The basin is artificial.

Galleries

From the basin of Cesima two galleries start and at the base of them there is a piezometric well.

Forces conducts

The four metal pipes are at open air.

Station

It’s in front of the lower reservoir,it is formed by four separated wells. On the large square of the station there are two electric cranes of 250 tonnes.

Attention for the habitat

The station is in part in the common of Sesto Campano (Isernia) and in part in the common of Presenzano (Caserta). It was built between the first of July in 1981 and the fifth of July in 1990.
The Presenzano plant started to work operating fully in 23 January 1997, reaching 1000 mW, the maximum value of the installed power. The attention for the habitat was one of the principal aspects of the plant’s building. The project of a well station has reduced at minimal level  the factory’s bodies on the country. On the external slants, moreover, an adequate  green mantle  has been put.
The building of the station doesn’t change the regimen of the rivers near that zone.

Water games

The basin of the station represents the unique occasion to take up sport in the open air thanks to the realization of a sport complex formed by a competition field, tribunes for the public, game parks and a dressing-room.
The organization of Nautical Center activities has been entrusted to Associazione Sport Vacanze Presenzano, guided by the olympic champion of rowing Davide Tizzano.

An unusual way to learn

After this experience, we knew that behind a simple action, as switching on the light at home, there  many people’s work, so it is very important not to abuse of electrical energy and  remember that it isn’t inexhaustible. Moreover this lesson allowed us to live an important experience and have a very interesting lesson.
